An Indescribable Gift
Bible Reading: 2 Corinthians 9:1-15
Gift-giving is a celebrated Christmas tradition; huge amounts are spent on buying gifts like books, art, clothing, toys, gadgets, cookware, and jewelry. We like to spread the Christmas joy by distributing gifts to those in need. But whatever we may buy, sooner or later they would be broken or lose their sheen. No earthly gift, no matter how priceless or thoughtful, will last forever. But the Bible talks about a priceless gift!
Paul was writing to the Corinthians about giving, and he ended that discussion by reminding them that God is the greatest giver. Jesus summarized its profound significance, saying, "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life" (John 3:16).
Jesus is the perfect Gift!
Jesus is the reason we celebrate Christ's birth on Christmas Day. Even though we did not deserve and could never earn this Gift, God freely gave Jesus to all who will receive Him!
Paul, a brilliant man trained under Gamaliel, could not find a suitable adjective to describe the Gift of Jesus. So he says, “Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift” (2 Corinthians 9:15). Paul chooses a term that is used nowhere else in all of Scripture. While writing to the Galatians, Paul says, “When the fullness of the time came, God sent forth his Son, born of a woman, born under the Law, that he might buy back those who were under the law” (Galatians 4:4). Jesus is the Gift of God's love to mankind, and it is an unspeakable blessing.
As I sat thinking, I could not imagine where I would be without Jesus. I would be helplessly caught up in sin and destined to hell! Jesus is the best Gift, for by Grace, He has gifted me His righteousness and has made me worthy of heaven! God's indescribable Gift should fill us with gratitude. Jesus is the reason for the hope, peace, joy, and love that surrounds Christmas!
If we really understand and appreciate this indescribable Gift, our lives will be filled with gratitude.
My friend, Jesus, came to save us from our sins and give us eternal life. The question we have to answer today is, is this Jesus your Savior? If not, accept Him today. He is Emmanuel, God with us today, carrying our burdens, comforting us, and leading us into a New Year. Jesus is the greatest Gift we can ever receive. Have a blessed Christmas!
Prayer: Lord Jesus, my heart is filled with gratitude when I think You came to save me and that thought fills me with hope, peace, joy, and love. Amen.
