Are You a Big-Godder?

Sep 10, 2019 By Hephzibah Stephen

Last week we had the opportunity of listening to Dr. Steve Farrar, at Stonebriar Community Church in Frisco, Texas. He spoke about the awesomeness of God and quoted an anecdote about a Princeton Seminary Professor named Robert Dick Wilson. Dr. Wilson always sat in front to listen to his former students who returned to preach in his Seminary to see if he was a big-godder or a little-godder, because that will then define their ministry. When Dr. Wilson was asked what he meant by that he had replied, "Well, some men have a little god and they are always in trouble with him. He can't do any miracles. He doesn't intervene on behalf of His people. They have a little god and I call them little-godders. Then there are those who have a great God. He speaks and it is done. He commands and it stands fast. He knows how to show Himself strong on behalf of them that fear Him." Dr. Wilson had then told Dr. Barnhouse, his student that he could see that he had a great God and that God would bless him and his ministry.

Dr. Farrar went on to say how each of us can be a big-godder. He said that we should remove from our thoughts the limits we put on God. We should guard our hearts from such thoughts consciously. When we are asked to pray for someone or some issue, we think in our hearts that it is impossible. We of course pray but deep in a corner, we think that particular situation is just not redeemable! We think that disease cannot be healed or that marriage can never work out or that particular person can never be saved! We ourselves limit God.

When doubts raise or fears assail, we should meditate on the awesome God who created the heavens and the earth. The Bible says that God counts the number of the stars and calls them all by name (Ps 147:4). The Bible says in Isaiah 40:12 that God has measured the waters in the hollow of His hand, measured the heavens with a span, and calculated the dust of the earth in a measure. He has weighed the mountains in scales and the hills in a balance.

My friend, remember we have an awesome God who is able to do immeasurably more than we ask or imagine. Do not give in to negative thoughts and be a little-godder!
