Bought at a Price!

Sep 19, 2017 By Hephzibah Stephen

An evangelist of reasonable age one day told the Lord, “Lord, for so many years I have served you by preaching the Word and mentoring groups of youngsters. Now Lord, I want to retire.” The next day he woke up leisurely and went for a walk. On his way, he saw a loaded bullock-cart with the bullock fallen on the road. When he came close with the thought of helping the bullock up, he rolled his eyes and told the evangelist his story: “My Master bought me at a price and every single day when he picked up the yoke I came and harnessed myself willingly. Even this morning I did that in spite of not feeling too well. Till my last breath, I have served my master because he bought me at a price.” The story goes on to say that the evangelist realized his mistake. (Rev. Rajan Edward, Host of Christ Ministries, Tirunelveli).

The story touched my heart too! We have all been bought at a price and we are not our own! Hearing it again kind of hit home hard!

Sometimes we forget what it cost Jesus on the Cross of Calvary. Since we did suffer on that Cross, we tend to take it lightly! We are not our own. Paul says in 1 Corinthians 6:20, “you were bought at a price. Therefore honour God with your bodies“ and in 1 Corinthians 7:23 he says,” You were bought at a price; do not become slaves of human beings”.

It is not that we should not ever relax or take a vacation or enjoy ourselves. When God created Adam and Eve, He put them in a lush garden so that they can enjoy themselves. Whatever we may do we have to remember we are His children and we are not our own. All our choices have to be governed by this underlying principle! Our life testimony is not something we can retire from or perform in front of a crowd or for a group. It is in our every private moment and personal thought. In all that we do, we have to bring honour to God who has bought us at a price.

My friend, are we honoring God with our bodies and thoughts in every way, every day of our lives or have we become slaves of friends, fame and fortune? That is the question we have to answer today!
