Building up the wall…

Mar 26, 2019 By Hephzibah Stephen

In the good old days of castles, fortresses, and strongholds, when an enemy threatened, people took shelter inside the walls of the forts, and they felt secure! If there ever was a breach in the wall, then everyone rallied around the breach, fighting the invading forces and building up the wall, all at the same time. If they are not able to stop the enemy at that point, then the safety and security of their city will be lost entirely. The breach may be small, but it will cost them their very lives! The Bible talks about the Lord as our rock and fortress again and again. Psalm 18:2 says, "The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer; My God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold." Psalm 91:2 says, "I will say of the LORD, "He is my refuge and my fortress; my God, in Him I will trust." If God is our fortress and our stronghold, then how does the devil ever attack us? Have you ever thought of that?

Every one of our sinful thoughts and actions creates a breach in the wall, and the devil is just waiting for a foothold! The Bible says in 1 Peter 5:8, "Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour." Every sin we commit breaches our wall of protection! In his great work ‘Overcoming Sin and Temptation,' John Owen lists six evil effects of sin. He says sin deprives us of spiritual strength and comfort. It weakens the soul and robs it of its strength. Then sin becomes the delight of the heart, and it becomes the meditation of our minds. Sin hinders our spiritual walk with our Saviour, and it darkens the soul. How very true!

My friend, look within your heart and mind today. Today we are called to repair the breach and build the wall around our lives. Every sin that has ensnared you will destroy your life or the lives of your loved ones in the end. Confront sin, confess it and turn from it. It is the only way to repair the wall of protection. Shall we pray with David saying, "Forgive my hidden faults. Keep your servant also from willful sins; may they not rule over me."(Psalm 19:12,13)
