Curses and Blessings
Bible Reading: Numbers 22–24
In India, many people are familiar with the idea of Thirushti, or the evil eye. There is a fear that another person's jealousy, ill will, or negative attention can bring harm, and therefore people perform religious rituals to protect themselves from its effects.
The Bible, however, points us to a God who is far greater than any human curse or evil intention.
In Numbers 22–24, Balak, the king of Moab, was afraid of Israel. He called Balaam and asked him to curse God's people. Balak believed that a curse pronounced by Balaam could bring disaster upon Israel. But Balaam discovered that he could not say anything except what God permitted him to say! God has blessed Israel, and Balaam could not reverse it. What a powerful statement!
Balak wanted to curse, but God turned it into a blessing!
We do not have to live in fear of the evil eye or spend our lives performing rituals to protect ourselves from curses. Our confidence is not in charms, and rituals but in the sovereign God who watches over us, His people. God Is faithful even when His people are not. Israel repeatedly failed, complained, and rebelled, yet God continued to lead them and protect them.
Balak could make his plans. Balaam could be hired. Altars could be built. But none of these could overturn God's purpose for Israel.
The story reminds us that God's blessing and protection are greater than human opposition. Someone may speak against us, misunderstand us, envy us, or even desire our harm. We cannot control what others think or say. But we can trust the God who holds our lives in His hands and He would protect us.
Joseph experienced something similar when his brothers intended evil against him. Years later he could say: “But as for you, you meant evil against me; but God meant it for good.” (Genesis 50:20). What others intend for evil, God is able to use it for His purposes. Therefore, we need not live anxiously, constantly wondering who may have cast a curse upon us or who may be wishing us harm. We belong to Christ. Our security is not found in rituals of protection but in the sovereign care of God.
My friend, when you face jealousy, opposition, negative words, or circumstances that seem to be working against you, do not live in fear. Turn your eyes to God. The God who changed Balaam's curse into a blessing is still sovereign. Trust Him, remain faithful to Him, and leave the outcome in His hands.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, my life is in Your hands and that no human plan can overturn Your purposes for me. Deliver me from fear and help me to trust Your sovereign protection. Amen.
