Ebenezer

Ebenezer  Bible Reading:1 Samuel 7:1-14 

 

The Philistines captured the Ark, but they chose to return it because the hand of the LORD was heavy on them.  The people of Beth Shemesh also suffered because they looked inside the Ark. Then the Ark was put in the house of Abinadab in Kirjath Jearim.  However, still, the people were afraid of the Philistines.  

 

Samuel then gathered the house of Israel and preached repentance, saying, “If you return to the LORD with all your hearts, then put away the foreign gods and the Ashtoreths from among you, and prepare your hearts for the LORD, and serve Him only; and He will deliver you from the hand of the Philistines” (1 Samuel 7:3). 

 

Dr. Kevin DeYoung, Senior Pastor of Christian Covenant Church, North Carolina, says the believers put 80% emphasis on believing, 18% on obedience and only 2% on repentance.   But DeYoung says, we cannot grow in our Christian walk unless we start with repentance.  

 

How very true. 

 

The first thing we must do to find the Lord’s favour again is to repent and return to God’s ways. John the Baptist preached repentance, and Jesus preached repentance.   Repentance is turning from sin and turning to Christ.  It is not just regret!   

 

Samuel summoned all Israel to meet him at Mizpeh, and there he prayed for them. They fasted, afflicted their souls, expressing repentance, and Samuel interceded with a sacrifice. Samuel set up a memorial and called it Ebenezer, which means, ‘Hitherto the Lord hath helped us’.   

 

Samuel wanted the people to remember all the things the Lord had done for them, the victories He had won and the provisions He had made and express sincere gratitude.  When we remember God’s goodness with a grateful heart, it quickens our hearts to our sins and unfaithfulness.  And that leads to repentance.  Samuel called the nation to repentance.  The repentance had to be inward in the hearts and outward, in the removal of the idols.  

 

The Lord fought for Israel that day, and there lies our lesson today.  

 

As we look back on the year that has gone by, give thanks with a grateful heart, repent, and return to the Lord, forsaking the idols of the heart.  Then the Lord Himself will go before us and make the crooked paths straight in the coming New Year. 

 

My friend, we can boldly say that, thus far, the Lord has helped us.  The Lord has promised never to leave us if we cling to Him with all our soul, heart and mind.  Have a wonderful New Year! 

 

Prayer:  Lord Jesus, You have been my Ebenezer God and my Emmanuel God.  Help me cling to You and Your Word every day in the New Year. Amen.

பெலிஸ்தர்   உடன்படிக்கை   பெட்டியைக்   கைப்பற்றினாலும் ;   கர்த்தருடைய   கை   அவர்கள்மேல்   பாரமாயிருந்தபடியினால்   அதைத்   திருப்பி   அனுப்பிவிட்டார்கள்.  பெத்ஷிமேசின்   மக்கள்   பேழைக்குள்   பார்த்ததால்   அவர்களும்    பாதிக்கப்பட்டனர் .   பின்பு   அந்தப்   பேழை   கீரியாத்தீயாரீமிலுள்ள   அபினதாபின்   வீட்டில்   வைக்கப்பட்டது .  இருப்பினும் ,  மக்கள்   பெலிஸ்தியர்களைப்   பார்த்து   பயந்தனர் . 

சாமுவேல் இஸ்ரவேல் வம்சத்தாரைக் கூடிவரச்செய்து மனந்திரும்புதலைப் பிரசங்கித்து “நீங்கள் உங்கள் முழுஇருதயத்தோடும் கர்த்தரிடத்தில் திரும்பி, அந்நிய தேவர்களையும், அஸ்தரோத்தையும் உங்கள் நடுவிலிருந்து விலக்கி, உங்கள் இருதயங்களை கர்த்தருக்கு நேராக்கி, அவரை மாத்திரம் சேவிக்கக்கடவீர்கள்; அப்பொழுது அவர் உங்களை பெலிஸ்தரின் கைக்குத் தப்புவிப்பார்” என்றான்.   (1சாமு 7:3) 

 

வட கரோலினாவிலுள்ள கிறிஸ்தவ உடன்படிக்கை தேவாலயத்தின் மூத்த போதகர் டாக்டர் கெவின் டியூங்  என்ன   கூறுகிறார்   என்றால் , கிறிஸ்தவ சபைகள் 80% நம்பிக்கைக்கு, 18% கீழ்ப்படிதலுக்கும், 2% மட்டுமே மனந்திரும்புதலுக்கு  முக்கியத்துவம் அளிக்கிறது.  ஆனால் நம்முடைய கிறிஸ்துவ வாழ்க்கையை மனந்திரும்புதலுடன் தொடங்காவிட்டால் அதில் நாம் வளர முடியாது என்று  டியூங் கூறுகிறார். 

 

இது எவ்வளவு உண்மை. 

 

கர்த்தருடைய கிருபையை மீண்டும் பெற நாம் செய்ய வேண்டிய முதல் விஷயம், மனந்திரும்பி கடவுளின் வழிகளுக்குத் திரும்புவதாகும்.  யோவான் ஸ்நானகனும் , இயேசுவும் மனந்திரும்புதலைப் பிரசங்கித்தார்கள்.  மனந்திரும்புதல் என்பது பாவத்திலிருந்து விலகி கிறிஸ்துவிடம் திரும்புவதாகும். இது வெறும் வருத்தப்படுவதுமட்டுமல்ல. 

 

சாமுவேல் இஸ்ரவேலர் எல்லாரையும் மிஸ்பாவுக்கு வரவழைத்து, அங்கே அவர்களுக்காக ஜெபம்பண்ணினான்.   இஸ்ரவேலர் அங்கு உபவாசித்து, மனந்திரும்புதலை வெளிப்படுத்தினர், சாமுவேல் ஒரு நினைவுச்சின்னத்தை அமைத்து, "இம்மட்டும் கர்த்தர் எங்களுக்கு உதவினார்” என்று சொல்லி அதற்கு எபெனேசர் என்று பெயரிட்டார். 

 

நன்றியுள்ள இருதயத்துடன் நாம்  கர்த்தர்   செய்த   நன்மைகளை நினைவுகூரும்போது, அது நம் இதயங்களை உயிர்ப்பிக்கிறது.  மனந்திரும்புதலுக்கு வழிவகுக்கிறது. மனந்திரும்புதல் உள்ளான  இருதயத்தில் இருக்க வேண்டும்.   பாவங்களை   விட்டு   விலக   வேண்டும் 

 

கர்த்தர் அந்நாளில் இஸ்ரவேலுக்காக யுத்தம்பண்ணினார், அதுவே இன்று  நம்முடைய பாடமாயிருக்கிறது.   

 

என்   நண்பரே , கடந்த ஆண்டை நாம் திரும்பிப் பார்க்கும்போது,  நம்   இருதயம் நன்றியால் நிரம்புகிறது. மனந்திரும்பி  கர்த்தரிடம் திரும்புங்கள்.  அப்பொழுது ஆண்டவரே நமக்கு முன் சென்று வரும் புத்தாண்டில் கோணலான பாதைகளை நேராக்குவார்.  இதுவரை இறைவன் நமக்கு உதவி செய்திருக்கிறார்.  முழு, மனதுடனும் அவரைப் பற்றிக்கொண்டால் நம்மை ஒருபோதும் கைவிட மாட்டர்.   அனைவருக்கும்   புத்தாண்டு   வாழ்த்துக்கள். 

 

ஜெபம்:  கர்த்தராகிய இயேசுவே, நீர் எனக்கு எபெனேசர்ராகவும், இம்மானுவேலராகவும் இருந்திருக்கிறீர்.  புத்தாண்டில் ஒவ்வொரு நாளும் உம்மையும் உம்முடைய வசனங்களையும் பற்றிக் கொள்ள எனக்கு உதவுவீராக.  ஆமென்.
