Faith and Action
King Hezekiah was one of the good kings who ruled Judah. The Bible says in 2 Chr. 29:2 that he did what was right in the sight of the Lord. Because of the apostasy of Ahaz, his father, the Temple of the Lord was shut and filled with debris. As soon as Hezekiah came to power, he opened the doors of the Temple. He ordered the Levites to sanctify themselves and then start repairing and cleaning the Temple. Then Hezekiah restored the Temple worship with sacrifices and singing. After restoring Temple worship, Hezekiah observed the Passover and sent letters to all Israel calling them to return to the Lord! The commitment and zeal of King Hezekiah is very commendable and whatever he did, he did with all his mind and all his soul!
What impressed me most was the action of the people after they participated in the Passover remembering their deliverance from Egypt. We read in 2 Chr.31:1, that all those who were present at Passover, went out to the cities of Judah and broke down the sacred pillars, the wooden images and the high places! Their faith was revived and fully charged and that resulted in immediate action. Because of the commitment of Hezekiah, the people also did the right thing. Hezekiah’s commitment came out of his desire to walk with the Lord and his zeal had touched everyone who participated in the Passover.
We go to Church and the Lord speaks to us through the Sermon or the songs. In our quiet time, when we read the Word, God speaks to us. God points out the problems with our attitudes and priorities. The Word of God challenges us to deeper commitment and a sanctified life! Do we immediately act upon it and seek God’s help to overcome it or do we just ignore the prompting of the Holy Spirit and go on with life as usual?
My friend, this is the question we have to answer today.
The commitment to do the right thing has to flow from the top. If we are not committed in doing the right thing, our children also will not have the commitment. We are saved only by grace not by our actions; but our faith has to result in action; correcting ourselves where we need correction, forgiving those who have done us harm and loving the unlovable. So that over time, we will be changed people; changed for the better, the changes visible to all those around us.
