Faith, like a Mustard Seed
It is amazing how Jesus used everyday things to teach great truths! Jesus has taught us a great lesson about faith using the mustard seed. The mustard seed in Israel was a small seed but it grew up to be a big tree, large enough for the birds of the air to find shelter. The first-time Jesus talked about the mustard seed was in a parable teaching about the kingdom of heaven. On another occasion, Jesus used the mustard seed to teach about faith. In Caesarea Philippi, a man asked Jesus to heal his son who was possessed by a demon (Matthew 17:14-21). His disciples had tried but had been unable to heal the boy. However, when Jesus rebuked the demon, it came out of the child. The disciples were amazed and asked Jesus why they were unable to heal the man's son. Jesus said that it was because of their unbelief. If they had had faith the size of a mustard seed, they could even move mountains!
There is, I believe, is yet another dimension of faith!
The Bible says in Romans 12:3 that "…God has dealt with each one a measure of faith". Does God give to some a faith that cannot get miracles done or prayers answered? No. God is not partial. The measure may be different. But the kind of faith given by God to each one is the same. That is not what Jesus is teaching. Jesus paints a picture of the type of faith they needed to appropriate the blessings of the Kingdom. Our faith has to be of a kind that grows! If we are going to have our prayers answered and demons driven away, our faith has to grow continuously and become so dominant that it will overshadow and blot out any unbelief in our life. And when that happens, Jesus says, nothing will be impossible for us.
My friend, do not think that you do not have enough faith. Jesus taught about small beginnings! But our faith has to constantly keep growing. There is only one way for our faith to grow. Let us fill our hearts with His Word, claim His promises and look to Jesus who is, "the author and finisher of our faith" (Heb 12:2). Then our problems will appear small for we have a God who is greater than our problems! May the Lord increase our faith!
