From Generation to Generation
Bible Reading: Psalm 145:1-21
I just got back from my 50-year class reunion of the 1976 batch from the College of Engineering, Guindy (CEG), Chennai. It was a great moment to look back on my journey and give glory to God for His hand upon my life! A classmate of mine said that as soon as he was born, he was destined to graduate from CEG since his father and his grandfather both graduated from there! I have no story like that. Actually, I was admitted to Holy Cross College, Trichy, for a B.Sc. Maths degree, but when my father was transferred to Chennai, he learned that his friend’s daughter was studying engineering, so I ended up at CEG. It is nothing but the hand of God!
Looking back, my heart is filled with gratitude, and I join with David and say, “I will extol You, my God, O King; and I will bless Your name forever and ever. Every day I will bless You, and I will praise Your name forever and ever. Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised;
And His greatness is unsearchable” (Psalm 145:1-2).
As I read and reread this Psalm, what caught my attention was the Psalmist's asking one generation to praise His works to another! This suggests faithful remembering, careful telling, and intentional passing on. We do not have to pass on our success, but we have to pass on stories of God’s mighty acts—His faithfulness in our ordinary lives, His mercy in our failures, and His guidance through the uncertainties. I can see God’s hand woven through them all.
When we tell our life stories honestly, we offer the next generation something far more valuable than achievement: hope anchored in God’s faithfulness. Our legacy is not measured only by what we built or earned, but by the faith we modelled—how we trusted God, how we loved others, how we endured loss, and how we remained hopeful.
My friend, a reunion reminds us that time moves on, but God’s faithfulness does not fade. From generation to generation, the story continues. We are stewards of a living faith, entrusted not just to remember, but to pass on.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank You for being with me all these years, protecting me and guiding me. Help us to live in such a way that Your goodness is clearly seen in our lives, so that those who come after us may know You and trust You. Amen.
