Lessons from the Life of Rebekah

Bible Reading: Genesis 24: 45 -58

 

Rebekah's life is one of the most fascinating and instructive stories in the book of Genesis.  Her story is always read at the wedding engagement ceremony in India!  Her response, "I will go" (Genesis 24:58), remains one of the Bible's great statements of faith!  

 

When Abraham's servant arrived at the well seeking a wife for Isaac, Rebekah willingly offered water not only to him but also to his ten thirsty camels.  This was no small act of kindness.  It revealed a servant's heart, diligence, and generosity.  She also demonstrated her faith by leaving her family and homeland to marry a man she had never met.  

 

She began as a woman of remarkable faith and generosity, yet later became a tragic example of what can happen when faith gives way to manipulation.  Her life teaches us that God's promises are fulfilled not by human schemes but by trusting obedience.  Years later, when Rebekah was barren, Isaac prayed for her, and God answered.  During her difficult pregnancy, she sought the Lord, and God revealed that the older son would serve the younger (Genesis 25:23).  She knew God's promise clearly.

 

Yet this is where her story turns. 

 

Instead of waiting for God to accomplish His word, she took matters into her own hands.  By plotting, she helped Jacob to deceive the aged Isaac to secure his blessing, but at a great cost.  Her family was torn apart.  Esau hated Jacob, Jacob had to flee for his life, and Rebekah never saw her beloved son again.  The blessing was obtained, but peace at home was lost.  

 

Rebekah's life reminds us that God's promises never need sinful shortcuts.  

 

Favouritism destroys families.  Deception may achieve a short-term goal but often brings long-term sorrow.  Waiting on God's timing is better than manipulating circumstances.

We may know God's will, but our impatience can tempt us to manipulate circumstances, justify dishonesty, or rely on our own wisdom.  The Lord is not only concerned with the destination but also with the path we take to get there.  God's promises never require sinful methods.

 

My friend, are we trying to accomplish God's purposes through human methods?  Are we allowing favouritism, fear, or impatience to influence our decisions?  True faith waits, prays, and obeys even when God's timing seems slow.  And that is the challenge for us today.

 

Prayer: Lord Jesus, help me to patiently wait for Your time and never manipulate situations or people, even to accomplish Your will.  Lord, grant me patience.  Amen.
