Oh Death, where is thy Sting?
When Jesus bore our sins on the Cross, He suffered the agony of separation from His Father in heaven. Jesus cried, “Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? That is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?” (Matthew 27:46). When God the Father saw Jesus on the Cross, He only saw the sins of all humanity and those sins separated Jesus from His Father’s face. That moment of separation was the worst of all His suffering!
A child of God, whose sins are forgiven, need not ever experience such separation. All our sins are forgiven and washed away because of the blood that was shed on that Cross of Calvary. When we are washed by Jesus’ blood, the Father sees in each of us only that finished work of the Cross. The Father does not see our sinfulness but sees us covered by the blood of Jesus. He sees us made worthy by the Blood of Jesus; He sees us made holy by the blood of Jesus; He sees us made fit for heaven by the blood of Jesus!
Even for a believer, thoughts of death are not very pleasant. It is quite scary even though we know that Christ came that we might have eternal life!
As we grow old, thoughts about death linger in our hearts as somehow it seems closer! One day as I was meditating on this, the Lord suddenly made it very clear in my heart. And it was very comforting!
Death will be just like falling asleep and waking up. Instead of waking up in this world, we will wake up in the presence of the Lord. We will not feel any separation at all and so we need not have any fear. When we go to sleep the presence of the Lord is with us and when we wake up also, we will be in His presence!
I saw this peace on my mother’s face. The last few days of her life she could not speak much but she peacefully slipped away! Death has no power over us because of the victory Jesus won on the Cross. We have nothing to fear for nothing can separate us from His Presence.
God will take care of you, long as you live,
Granting you blessings no other can give;
He will take care of you when time is past,
Safe to His Kingdom will bring you at last.
