Passing it on to the Children!
Bible Reading: Deuteronomy 4:1-14
When we do not remember our past rebellions against God and their outcomes, we can easily fall into the same sinful patterns. The LORD had commanded Moses to remind the Israelites how God redeemed and provided for them in the past. Also, He commanded Moses to teach them His statutes and judgments so that they could live in obedience to them and inherit the blessing of the Promised Land.
In a way, their immediate blessing depended on their obedience! Israel was to attack strong nations to possess the Promised Land, and they were not warriors. If they did not have the blessing of the LORD upon them, they would be in great trouble. So, as they were ready to enter the Promised Land, Moses wanted them to think about the need for obedience in light of their past rebellions.
The Lord wanted the nations around to see the God of Israel as the one true God. God intended to exalt Israel among the nations when they obeyed His covenant and thus make them a testimony.
God expected two things from the people of Israel.
Firstly, God did not want them to forget how He had delivered them from their enemies and how He had cared for them during their wilderness journey. Secondly, He wanted each generation to teach the next about the power, might, and mercy of the Lord God who carried them.
Understanding the nature of God from the past is pivotal to building faith in the hearts of subsequent generations. This faith, then, would inculcate a healthy fear of God, leading to obedience!
My friend, do you share with your children and grandchildren the goodness of the Lord in your life? We have a circle of influence within our family, among our children and grandchildren. Do we take time to teach them the Biblical precepts and values? God expects us to bring up our children to fear the Lord.
Prayer: Dear Lord, I realise my responsibility in bringing up the next generation in the knowledge and fear of the Lord. Lord, give them an open heart to understand and obey Your precepts. Amen.
