Teach us to Number Our Days!

Sep 25, 2018 By Hephzibah Stephen

Many prayers of Moses are recorded in the Bible and Psalm 90 is one of them. Psalm 90 is attributed to Moses and it makes it the oldest of the psalms, dating back to some 3,000 years or more. It might have been written after the death of Miriam and Aaron towards the end of Moses’ life.

This Psalm is always read during the funeral service because here Moses asks God to teach him to number his days! When compared to God who is eternal, Man’s life is truly short. Psalm 90:4,5 says, “A thousand years in your sight are like a day that has just gone by, or like a watch in the night” and we are like the grass which grows up. We do not know the years God has ordained for us.

Sometimes somethings upset us. It may be due to some people or some events from the past or some unknown fears of the future. While the past cannot be changed, the future is not ours at all. We do not know what the next moment will bring! When we allow such things to affect our mood, we truly lose the day God has so graciously given us. ‘Today’ has been given to us by God to live for His Glory. We must believe that God is sovereign over all that ever happens to us. We are commanded to rejoice by Paul (Phil 4:4) in all circumstances. Instead of that when we get upset and make the people around us also get upset, then we have surely wasted one day of our lives! We have to truly ask God to give us a heart of wisdom to number our days.

We have many things to be thankful for. We have not been punished according to our iniquities and God in His mercy has forgiven us. Through all our trials, He has walked with us and carried us. That should make us rejoice and be glad all the days of our lives! Let us choose to be happy every single day of our lives for each day is a gift from God.

My friend, life is short. Do not lose a day in your life by getting mood spoilt. Let us pray and ask God to teach us to number our days so that we may gain a heart of wisdom!
