The Living Word
A friend of ours who had read my book, “Engaging with God’s Word Through the year 2017”told me this: He said, “I can hear your voice; I can hear you speaking to me when I read your book.”I was amazed when I heard it!
Isn’t that what God wants to hear? When the Holy Spirit inspired the prophets and other writers of the Bible to record His Words for us to read, did not God want us to hear His voice and hear Him speak to us?
The Word of God (The Bible) is living. We know it for the Bible tells us so. “For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, …….“(Heb. 4:12). When Man was formed, “LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life;…” (Gen 2:7). The Bible testifies again in 2 Tim 3:16, “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness.”
The Word of God can give us life. When we are dead in sin, His Word can breathe into us the ‘breath of life’ and quicken our hearts into realizing our sinfulness. The Word of God has life. The Word of God has power. The Word can correct us, teach us, rebuke us and has the power to help us live a victorious life; a life of righteousness in this sinful world. The hearts and minds of the disciples on the road to Emmaus were filled with thoughts of Jesus and we hear them testifying, “Did not our heart burn within us while He talked with us on the road, and while He opened the Scriptures to us?” ( Luke 24:32).
My friend, do you hear God speak to you when you read the Bible? Does your heart glow within you when God speaks to you from His Word?
Many times, we do not spend time reading and reflecting on the Word of God. We are in a great hurry to finish reading the three chapters or whatever portion we read daily. We do not even remember the portion five minutes after we finish. That way we cannot hear God speaking to us.
You may be working with a tight schedule. Never commit to reading many chapters. Read the Word to hear His voice. Jesus is the incarnate Word (John 1:1). Read the same passage again and again, if you have to. Finishing the Bible in a year or many times in a year is not important. It is good but hearing His voice and hearing God speak to us through His Word is the most important thing.
