The Name Lists

Jul 30, 2024 By Hephzibah Stephen

There are many lists of names in the Bible. Some are part of genealogies while some other lists are part of people groups or soldier groups that were worthy to be mentioned. But it is important to understand that the genealogies and other lists in the Bible are not entirely complete. There are many people who are left out. They often "highlighted" prominent people from the past, but left off those people who were not that well known. Genealogies bolster the historicity of Scripture, confirm prophecy, and provide insight into the character of God and the lives of His people.

Even though genealogies may at first glance appear irrelevant, they hold an important place in Scripture. While I read the Bible, when I come upon such genealogies, I sometimes want to skip them. But I force myself to read them knowing that all Scripture is God-breathed (2 Timothy 3:16)! Since the Holy Spirit included them, they must bear some significance and there must be something we can learn from these lists!

The name of Rahab in the Messianic line (Ruth 4:21-22; Matthew 1:5) somehow stood out and touched my heart!

Rahab’s story is found in Joshua 2–6. This passage describes the conquest of the fortified city of Jericho by the Israelites. When Joshua sent two spies to look over the land, Rahab protected them by hiding them. She agreed to help them escape, provided she and her family were spared in the upcoming battle. Rahab was not in an ideal circumstance to come to faith in the one true God, the God of Israel. She was a gentile and was part of a corrupt, pagan culture. Rahab had a shady past (Hebrew 11:31 & James 2:25).

The name of Rahab in the genealogy of Jesus speaks volumes about the heart of God! We see God valuing each and every life without partiality. No one, not even one is beyond the mercy of God. God is not mindful of the past. What God is interested in is the changed heart. Faith, coupled with the actions prompted by faith today is important to God!

My friend, whatever your situation may be, whatever may be buried in your past, do not worry. God is looking at your repentant heart today and He will honour you for your faith.

Take heart, my friend, our God is mindful of each one of us!
