The Tragedy of Unbelief

Oct 23, 2018 By Hephzibah Stephen

Have you ever watched a cricket match or any other match for that matter? Recently we had the opportunity of watching the State Level Invitation Basketball Tournament for Indian Bank trophy in Chennai. The finals were played between the Indian Bank team and the Income Tax team. Both teams were very good and equally strong. It was a nail-biting match. It was anybody's game until the end but in the final minutes, the Income Tax team scored and won the trophy! When we watch a match, ball by ball, we will be very tense not knowing how the match would end. But the same match, when we watch the replay, we are not tense at all. Why? It is because we know how the match ended. Faith is like that!

Unbelief is the thief of God's blessings. But faith is a possessor!

Unbelief short-circuits the power of God, thereby preventing us from receiving the best that God has for us: "…For he that wavers is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. For let not that man think that he shall receive anything of the Lord…" says the Bible in James 1:6-8. Hebrews 3:17-19 lets us know that God was not pleased with the Israelites because they were unbelieving. On the other hand, faith takes a hold of the Word that has come, and claims it and appropriates it. According to Matthew Henry, "Unbelief is at the bottom of all our staggering at God's promises." We stagger because of unbelief. We waver because of unbelief. We fear because of unbelief. We doubt because of unbelief. And thus, lose the blessings of God!

My friend, do not let unbelief rob the blessings of God. Guard your heart and your words from unbelief. Therefore, do not wait for physical manifestations to believe. We have a God who can make roads in the wilderness and rivers in the desert. Isaiah 41:17 says, "I will open rivers in desolate heights and fountains in the midst of the valleys; I will make the wilderness a pool of water, and the dry land springs of water". Remember Peter did not sink due to the waves. Look to Jesus and His promises alone for that is the true antidote for unbelief.

Let us pray and ask the Lord to increase our faith!
