They that wait on the Lord…
The eagle is a magnificent bird! It has strong wings and always flies high above the rest. The eagle was associated with strength, courage, and farsightedness in the ancient world. No wonder Rome used it as their official emblem. It is the national emblem of Spain and Syria too. Even now the German and US coins display the eagle!
The Bible says in Isaiah 40:31,” But those who wait on the LORD shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint”. This prophecy of Isaiah was directed to the people of Judah who were in captivity in the land of Babylon. They were in exile because of their own unfaithfulness. But we see them actually complaining that they were being ignored by God (Is 40:27) even though their claim is just due to their special covenantal relationship. God did not get angry with them but encouraged them through the Prophet to “wait on the Lord.”
Eagles are huge birds and their wings are very strong; strong enough to propel them against gravity into the sky in seconds! Once airborne, the eagles do not flap their wings to rise further. They soar using the wind current to go higher and higher. They have no control over the wind currents but they tactfully use it to fly high!
My friend, many times, we cannot control what happens to us. It is God who strengthens us to soar like the eagles. With God’s help, we can use even our situations to soar like the eagles. When we walk through valley experiences, it is human to feel as though God is not helping us. But, my friend, take heart. The Lord says, “Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, Yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.” (Is 41:10)
As we enter this New Year, let us trust Him more, for all His promises are yea and amen in Christ Jesus and in His time, He will make everything beautiful!
