Thy Word is a Lamp

Jul 11, 2017 By Hephzibah Stephen

When you hear the word ‘lamp’, the word picture that comes to our mind is a gentle hand held device with oil and a wick, shedding light around the person who holds it! It is not a flare lighting up the whole area. It is not even like the electric torch which can shine its light at a distant object.

The Psalmist likens the Word of God to a lamp. Ps 119:105 says, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path”.

The Word of God illuminates our path if we can carefully guard the flame. When we allow the flame to go out, we will be engulfed in darkness. Human mind is very apprehensive of the unknown and that makes people search out prophets who can reveal the future to them. While making important decisions of life, people seek the help of prayer warriors who can find out the right decision for them.

God does not promise to show us the distant future but promises to guide us, one step at a time; just like the lamp!

It requires us to take the step by faith. While we do not know the future or what it holds, we know who holds our future. The Bible says that all His plans for us are good. Never to harm us but to prosper us (Jer 29:11). We have to trust Him and take God at His Word, and live one day at a time for He has promised never to leave us or forsake us.

Amy Grant captures this in her beautiful song

Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet
And a light unto my path. (2)

When I feel afraid, think I've lost my way
Still You're there right beside me
Nothing will I fear as long as you are near
Please be near me to the end!
