Today is the day!

March 2nd, 2018 is a memorable day in my life! During our early morning walk, I tripped and fell flat on the road. But for some bruises, nothing happened to me. Later that day, I learned that someone who had a fall just like me, was in the hospital waiting for a hip replacement! That same evening I went to a college to distribute Gideon New Testaments along with my friends. Suddenly we heard a crash and the building itself shook. We were horrified to see the corridor over which we had walked five minutes back, collapsed completely! Oh, what a day! That day, the Lord preserved me from all harm!

Psalm 95 is an amazing Psalm of David. No wonder our Church fathers included it in our regular Sunday worship! It is a praise and worship psalm originally written for the Feast of Tabernacles which was a time of joy for the Israelites as they celebrated the current bountiful harvest and at the same time remembered God’s goodness during the years of wilderness wandering.

The Psalmist calls us to worship God and lists the reasons why we should worship Him. We are to worship God for He is the Rock of salvation. He is a great King above all Gods and He holds the deep places of the earth in His hands. He made the seas and the dry land too. Above all, we are to worship Him because we are His people, His sheep, for truly He is our Good Shepherd!

The Psalmist solemnly reminds us of the time when the people grumbled instead of being grateful and lost the eternal blessing of entering into His rest. It is a warning to us! We are called to ‘hear’ His voice ‘today’. In the Bible, ‘hearing’ and ‘obeying’ are very closely related. Just listening without obeying has no meaning. And the call is to obey ‘today’ for we do not know what tomorrow will bring. The opportunity to obey may then be lost forever!

My friend, today is the day!

Are we still doubting God’s goodness even after experiencing His miraculous provision and protection over the years? Shall we all worship God with a thankful heart and decide to obey His Word? “For He is our God, and we are the people of His pasture, and the sheep of His hand” (Ps 95:7).
