What are you seeking?
A friend of ours once said that he learned about living a godly life, having a godly home and bringing up children in a godly way from the EU meetings he used to attend during his college days. He had sought to know how to be a godly husband and father even before he got married, and he found it. Many would have attended the same meeting or similar meetings, but all did not learn those lessons! People go for such meetings or attend church services for various reasons. Some attend to look holy. Some attend to meet friends. Some attend just out of compulsion or habit. If everyone seeks to know God's way of living, all will benefit. Different people seek different things, and you find what you seek!
The Bible says in Mt. 6:33, "But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and His righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you." This verse makes us think that if we wake up in the morning and read the Bible first, we are good to go and do whatever we want. Seeking God first, I believe, is much more than just reading the Bible as the first activity in the morning!
When we read the words 'His righteousness' we think of the divine exchange that took place on Cross and feel that it is a finished thing in a believer's life. Jesus said instead of seeking food, drink, and shelter, which are everyday activities, we have to seek God's kingdom and His righteousness continually. When Jesus said we have to seek 'His righteousness,' He meant that our standard of right and wrong has to be like His. Jesus said our righteousness has to exceed that of the Pharisees (Matthew 5:20) by redefining murder, adultery, and other values covering our everyday living. Seeking God first is to seek His will in every area of our life every day. Seeking God first is to seek to live a godly life acknowledging the Lordship of Christ. Seeking God first is never to compromise with the world but live in obedience to the Word. Then seeking God first should lead to living like Jesus in this world.
My friend, we have wasted our life and failed our Lord Jesus seeking many things- power, position, possessions, and degrees. Let us today decide to seek His Kingdom, and His righteousness for the Bible says that if we seek them first, God will help us, and He will add all the other things that we may ever need!
