Where is He … the King of the Jews?
I read this story in 'Our Daily Bread,' and it made much sense to me! It seems a young Mom invited her friend to the birthday party of her two-year-old son in a fancy restaurant. The friend carefully chose a gift, wrapped it up in bright colors, and went to the party. When she reached the place, she found the place decorated and filled with people. She looked around for the little boy, for she wanted to see the sparkle in his eyes when he opened her gift, but she could not find him anywhere. She finally asked the Mom about the whereabouts of the boy, and her reply shocked her. The mother had left the boy with the grandparents! That little boy was not welcome to his own birthday party! How very sad!
Somehow the consumerism around Christmas has hijacked the real meaning of Christmas. Now Christmas revolves around grand clothes, good food, great gifts, and of course, Santa Claus. Many do not even know the real reason for Christmas! For many, it is just a holiday season. People wish each other saying, 'Happy holidays!' When the wise men saw the star in the East, they knew that the King of the Jews was born, and they came looking for Him! Probably that is why the Bible calls them 'wise men'! The Bible says in Matthew 2:2 that the wise men came saying, "Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we have seen His star in the East and have come to worship Him." They knew all the prophecies of the Old Testament that pointed to Jesus. They knew that Jesus was born a King even though He was laid in a manger! They knew that He was worthy of their worship! They knew that Cross was a part of the plan of God for the Salvation of mankind! Everything is recorded in the Bible so that we will also know that Jesus came to save sinners like us from our sin and the resulting wrath of God!
My friend, it is time we sat and thought about why we celebrate Christmas. Is Jesus Christ, our personal Saviour, and His message of Salvation the center of our celebrations? Today is the day of Salvation! Jesus is the reason for the season, and the Cross is the reason for our joy and hope!
