Who am I, O Lord God?
King David was not a saint. He went through trying times following his fall. He had problems from within himself as well as from within his family. But David constantly sought the Lord and strengthened himself in the Lord. That is why God found him as the ‘man after His own heart’.
God communicated three things to David through Nathan (1 Chronicles 17:7,8). “I took you from the sheepfold, from following the sheep, to be ruler over My people Israel. And I have been with you wherever you have gone, and have cut off all your enemies from before you, and have made you a name like the name of the great men who are on the earth”. God also said in v11, “I will set up your seed after you, who will be of your sons; and I will establish his kingdom” and in v13 he said, “I will not take My mercy away from him, as I took it from him who was before you”.
David was, no doubt, overwhelmed! He was so overwhelmed with gratitude in his heart that he just went and sat in the Presence of God and said, ‘“Who am I, O LORD God? And what is my house, that You have brought me this far? (1 Chron. 17:16).
When I think of my humble beginning and look back on my life, I cannot but thank God for the forgiveness I have received and the protection and provision I have enjoyed. I can remember the days He carried me on His shoulders, comforting me and wiping away my tears. I can remember the days He sheltered me under His wings amidst the raging storms of my life. Looking back, I am overwhelmed too - who am I, O Lord God, that you have brought me this far?
Every one of us can identify with David. If we carefully count our blessings, we cannot but be overwhelmed! But more often than not we take our blessings for granted. We never realize our unworthiness. But the moment we encounter a problem in life, we immediately ask, ‘why me Lord?’
My friend, let us not be grumblers. Let us count our blessings and thank God for the way He has been mindful of us.
