Who is this?

Dec 10, 2019 By Hephzibah Stephen

My mother had excellent memory till the end. As long as she was able to go out, she used to accompany me to weddings and other social events. She will invariably want to know those who come and talk to me. She will ask me, 'who is this?' while the person is still present with me! But I had a unique problem. I am not a person of names and faces! Sometimes I may not be able to recall the person who is talking to me, and her question will put in a fix! So whenever I took her out, I will give clear instructions that she should never ask 'who is this?' while the person is still with me!

During the time of Jesus too, many asked that same question. When Jesus forgave the sins of the woman who anointed His feet with an alabaster flask of fragrant oil (Luke 7:36-49), those who sat at the table with Him asked, who is this who even forgives sins. When Herod, the tetrarch, heard of all that was done by Jesus, he was perplexed because some said that it was John the Baptist or Elijah. Herod said, "John, I have beheaded, but who is this of whom I hear such things?" (Luke 9:9). The Psalmist asks the same question and goes on to answer it too. "Who is this King of glory? The LORD strong and mighty,The LORD mighty in battle. … Who is this King of glory? The LORD of hosts, He is the King of glory (Psalm 24:8,10).

We come across people who ask us that question even today. People, who look at us think that we are Christians and ask, 'Who is this Jesus?' If our life is one that honors God, we can answer that question. But if our life-style is not according to the Word, our answer will never be convincing! When we live out the faith through the power of the Holy Spirit, we can answer that question saying that He is the same Jesus who has saved us from our sins and has enabled us to overcome sin.

My friend, we have come to another season of Advent when we remember the reason for Christ's birth. For many, we may be the only Gospel that they may ever read. I pray that we will realize the enormous responsibility and live a life reflecting Christ!
