My Prayer
As I was reading 2 Chronicles during my quiet time, one incident caught my attention. King Hezekiah was one of the good kings of Judah. The Bible says about king Hezekiah in 2 Chronicles 31:20-21 as follows: " … he did what was good and right and true before the LORD his God. And in every work that he began in the service of the house of God, in the law and in the commandment, to seek his God, he did it with all his heart. So he prospered."God also answered Hezekiah's prayer for an extension of life. The Bible says, "But Hezekiah did not repay according to the favor shown him, for his heart was lifted up….” (2 Chronicles 32:25). Later, Hezekiah realized his mistake and humbled himself, and God sa...
The Prayer of Daniel
Daniel was a man of prayer. He not only 'purposed in his heart' to keep his mind, body, and soul pure in the sight of God but was also a man given to prayer. Even when Daniel knew that king Darius had signed the royal decree, he knelt and prayed as was his custom since the early days. Daniel read the scriptures and based his thanksgiving and supplication based on the Scriptures. Even though Daniel himself lived according to the Scriptures, he confessed his nation's sins and prayed seeking God's mercy. Daniel fasted and prayed. The Bible says in Dan 9:23 that God answered his prayer "at the beginning of his supplications"itself! We have a lot to learn fro...
The Little Foxes!
I have heard many sermons preached on the life of Daniel. Daniel's life is a model for us in many ways. In the book of Daniel, angel Gabriel specifically told Daniel that he was "greatly beloved." It made me ponder about what made him so loved by God. As I started reading the book of Daniel, one phrase stopped me in my tracks. The Bible says in Daniel 1:8 that "Daniel purposed in his heart" that he would not defile himself with the king's delicacies. Here was Daniel in Babylon, taken as a captive by Nebuchadnezzar as a young man. Even under such a trying predicament, "Daniel purposed in his heart not to defile himself," that means he had decided to obey God come wh...
In its Time!
The Lord gave me a promise in December of 2005 regarding the marriage of our eldest son Sushil. The Lord said, “…I am the LORD; in its time I will do this swiftly.” (Isaiah 60:22b). I took God at His Word and thought of one activity connected with the wedding that will take time and decided to start on the guest list. According to His Word, God made it come to pass ‘swiftly.’ The Proposal came in June or July of 2006, and they were engaged on October 5th and married on January 5th the following year (2007). It was the right time for Sushil, and according to His Word, God made everything beautiful in its time (Eccl 3:11).
Dip and Drink!
After a brief storm, a schooner was adrift in the Atlantic ocean off the coast of Brazil. And they were out of drinking water! What a joy it must have been for the sailors when one morning they sighted a big ship at a distance! The schooner's radio officer sent an S.O.S. to the ship asking for water! They were amazed at the message they received. The coded reply read 'dip and drink.' They did not understand that message at all. They had been out of drinking water for four days in the same waters, and now they are being asked to dip and drink! After many messages back and forth, they understood that they were in the region where the great river Amazon flowed into the Atlantic. The river's force is so strong that although tides reverse its flow, water c...
The Furnace of Affliction!
Along with its high infectivity and fatality rates, the Corona Virus Disease has caused universal psychosocial impact. The forced quarantine has produced acute panic, anxiety, and depression. Many have committed suicide because of the stigma attached to it. Some have died of heart attack as soon as they received the news that they were COVID positive. The major issue apart from the dread, is the isolation and loneliness associated with the disease. As soon as a patient is admitted to a hospital, the person is completely isolated from human contact, from family and friends which leads to depression. Many are not able to handle such isolation!
<...The Mark!
A priest and a rabbi from local parishes were standing by the road’s side, holding up signs. The rabbi’s sign read, ‘The End is Near!’ On the other side of the road, the priest held up a sign which read, ‘Turn before it’s too late!’ They planned to hold up their signs to each passing car. ‘Get a job.’ The first driver yelled. The second, immediately behind the first, yelled, ‘Leave us alone, you religious freaks!’ Shortly, from around the curve, they heard the tyres screeching, followed by a splash. It was followed by more screeching and more splashes! It is just a story, but it conveys an important point. The prophecies of God are those signs to caution us and turn us back to our Saviour. It is tough to read prophecies of destru...
The Lord is my Portion!
I completed reading the book of Jeremiah with a heavy heart. The entire city of Jerusalem, from the temple to the palace, was burned by Nebuchadnezzar. They carried away all the sacred vessels and implements from the temple. King Zedekiah was blinded and taken to Babylon in fetters. Judah was carried away from their own God-given land! All because the people of Judah did not heed the warnings given by the Lord through the prophets. They did not repent and turn from their wicked ways. They willfully continued in all the evil practices of the surrounding nations. Prophet Jeremiah witnessed everything with his own eyes and sat weeping and lamented over Jerusalem. He says,&...
The Warning!
The waters of the Niagara River can be deceptive. It may be tranquil and calm initially, but as it approaches the falls, it will pick up speed. No one sailing those rough waters will be able to turn around after that point! Supposing two young men in a canoe sail down the Niagara river, what would you think? We would wonder how they could have ignored so many warnings about the approaching rapids. We would wonder how they could have forgotten the accounts of people who have accidentally fallen into the river and carried over the falls to their death. We would think that they must be simply out of their minds! Reading the book of the prophet Jeremiah, I felt the same sense of wonder! How could the people of Judah have ignored such clear warnings of the...
Does what I do matter to God?
I have read the book of Jeremiah many times. But this time, when I started reading, God brought a particular passage to my attention. The prophetic ministry of Jeremiah was between 629 and 585. The southern kingdom of Judah had not learned anything from the fall of Israel. They did not understand that it was the Lord who gave them over to the Assyrians because of idolatry, harlotry, and dishonesty. Judah also committed the same sins but thought that the Lord would not destroy them because the Temple was in Jerusalem. God sent prophets to warn them to repent because Babylonian captivity was round the corner. Jeremiah 5:1 says, "Go up and down the streets of Jerusalem, look aroun...
