I will guide you with my eye!
My mother-in-law raised five wonderful children. My husband tells me that when they were very young, if they misbehaved while visiting someone or when friends visited their home, one look from their mother would make them stop whatever they were doing. If they had been a little noisy, that look would silence them. The children perfectly understood the message in their mother's eyes and knew exactly what will happen next if they did not obey immediately! An outsider might not understand what exactly transpired, but the children will understand the instruction. I am sure this has happened in many homes!
I recently heard Rev. Isaac Johnson of St. Andrew's Kirk, Chennai explain it like this. The Lord says He will guide us with His eyes. To benefit from His guidance, we have to be looking at His eyes. We also have to understand what He is conveying. That is not possible without a relationship with the Lord. Only a person who already has a relationship will understand what His eyes are saying. And if we are not looking at Him, we will completely miss what Lord is trying to convey for the Bible says in Psalm 32:8, "I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will guide you with My eye."
The Bible is our rule book of faith and practice. If we know and understand the scriptures, we will be well on our way to having His guidance. He never guides His people contrary to the clear principles of His written Word. He also speaks to us through the circumstances we are in, through the people around, and through the messages and songs we hear. Most importantly, guidance comes from a knowledge of God Himself. We have to know what pleases Him and what displeases Him. There is no substitute for walking with God, reading His Word, and talking to Him daily. Unless we have this kind of relationship, we will completely miss His guidance! We then do not have to run to prayer warriors to find out what God wants us to do in any life situation!
My friend, what is your relationship with the Lord like today? Is it a casual and a nominal relationship? Unless we come to a close, intimate relationship with the Lord, we cannot be guided by Him. May God give us the wisdom to choose the right path!
