Immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine …
When children were young, we used to watch Robin Hood an American animated musical comedy produced by Walt Disney Productions very often. Actually, we still sometimes do! This film is based on the legend of Robin Hood but uses anthropomorphic animals instead of people. The story follows the adventures of Robin Hood, Little John and the inhabitants of Nottingham as they fight against the excessive taxation of Prince John. When Prince John tripled the taxes, most of the townsfolk end up in jail since they could not pay. In one of the prison scenes, all look famished, and a crumb from the hand of a Rabbit falls down. The Rabbit picks it up and gives it to the mouse. The beauty is, even though it is just a little ‘crumb', the mouse staggers under its weight and is able to share it with four other mice! Somehow this scene always brought to my mind the goodness of the Lord "…who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power…"! (Ephesians 3:20)
The Bible says in Lamentations 3:22-23, "Because of the LORD's great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning". The Bible says in 1 Timothy 1:14, "And the grace of our Lord was exceedingly abundant, with faith and love which are in Christ Jesus".1 John 1:9 says, "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness". God is an inexhaustible fountain of compassion, grace, and forgiveness. They are more than we can ever ask or imagine!
The situation may look grim, but His mercies never end. They are new every morning! If we need proof of God's mercy, we only have to look around. We will see the goodness of the Lord everywhere! Had we been dealt with according to our sins, we should have been consumed long ago, but we have been dealt with according to God's great mercies. God has helped us to begin a new year, a new month and a new week! We're alive and given grace upon grace, even though we don't deserve it.
My friend, be encouraged, for He has said that He will never leave us nor forsake us (Hebrews 13:5). He is the faithful God who keeps covenant and mercy for a thousand generations (Deut 7:9). Let our hearts be filled with gratitude and our mouths with praise!
