The Three Tests of Abraham

May 06, 2026 By Hephzibah Stephen

Bible Reading: Hebrews 11:8-19

God appreciated Abraham for his faith.  His faith was counted as righteousness (Genesis 15:6).  The life of Abraham is a powerful picture of faith tested in different seasons of life. His journey teaches us that faith is not proven in comfort but in obedience.

Ur of the Chaldees was an ancient city in southern Mesopotamia, modern-day Iraq. During Abraham’s time (around 2000 BC), it was a center of trade, culture, and moon-god worship. God called Abraham to leave everything familiar—his home, security, and future—and walk into the unknown, to a land he had never seen. The Bible says in Hebrews 11:8, "By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to the place which he would receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going."

God promised Abraham a son, yet decades passed without fulfillment. Waiting can be one of the hardest tests of faith.  The Bible says, “And so, after he had patiently endured, he obtained the promise” (Hebrews 6:15). The greatest test came when God asked Abraham to offer Isaac as a sacrifice: “Take now your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering ...” (Genesis 22:2).

This was not just a test of obedience but of total surrender. Abraham trusted that God could even raise the dead (Hebrews 11:19). At the last moment, God provided a substitute, revealing that He never intended to take Isaac but to test Abraham’s heart. Abraham did not have all the answers, but he trusted the One who called him.

Often, God leads us step by step, not by full clarity but by faith. Obedience begins when we trust God more than our understanding.

God honored Abraham’s faith because Abraham trusted Him completely, even without understanding. Abraham obeyed God’s call, waited patiently for His promise, and surrendered what was most precious to him. God values a heart that believes, trusts, and obeys Him above everything else.

My friend Abraham's life shows us three aspects of faith: walking when we do not know the way, waiting even when we do not see the answer, and surrendering when we do not understand. You may be going through a time of waiting or may be required to surrender something precious. Trust Him. The same God who guided Abraham is faithful to lead you and me today.

Prayer: Lord, give me a faith that obeys, endures, and surrenders. Help me trust You in every season of my life. Amen.
