Who Is the Greatest?

Apr 29, 2026 By Hephzibah Stephen

Bible Reading: Luke 22:24-39

As Jesus walked with His disciples toward the upper room for the Last Supper, an astonishing conversation was underway among them. They were asking one another, “Who is the greatest?” (Luke 22:24). While Jesus was moving toward the Cross, His followers were thinking about status, honour, and position.

This moment reveals a striking contrast. Jesus was preparing to give His life for the world, yet the disciples were still thinking in terms of worldly greatness. Their understanding of greatness was shaped by the world: power, recognition, and authority.

But Jesus was about to redefine greatness forever.

During that very meal, Jesus did something completely unexpected. He rose from the table, took a towel, and began to wash His disciples’ feet (John 13:4–5). In that culture, washing feet was the servant's task. Then Jesus said, “I am among you as the One who serves” (Luke 22:27).

Jesus reminds us that true greatness is the way of humility.

The world teaches us to climb higher, to seek recognition, and to prove our importance. But Jesus teaches us to kneel, to serve, and to love sacrificially.  The Cross is the ultimate expression of this humility. Jesus did not claim greatness by earthly standards. Instead, He gave Himself completely for others. What looked like weakness in the eyes of the world became the greatest act of love and redemption.

Sometimes we may not openly ask, “Who is the greatest?” but still seek approval, recognition, and status. Jesus is gently redirecting us today to a different path—the path of servant-hearted love. True greatness in the kingdom of God is not found in being above others but in serving others. It is found in humility, sacrifice, and obedience to Christ.

My friend, let us always remember the humility of Jesus as we participate in the Eucharist, not only His sacrifice.  When we follow Jesus, we must learn to lay aside our pride and ego and embrace a life of humble service.  Remember, in God’s kingdom, the greatest are not those who are served, but those who serve!

Prayer:  Lord Jesus, teach me the humility of the Cross and help me follow Your example of servant love. Forgive me my pride and give me a humble heart, willing to serve others. May my life reflect Your love, mercy, and humility always. Amen.
