What is Worship?

Bible Reading: John 4:23–24 

 

I often hear people say, ‘Oh, I love the worship in that church!’ Others speak of a gifted ‘worship leader,’ or say, ‘The worship was heavenly today.’  When worship leaders organize concerts, people pay good money to attend.   Worship is not entertainment.  While singing praises to God is certainly an important part of worship (Psalm 95:1–2), worship, I believe, is much more than just music and singing. 

 

What then is worship?  Worship is a life lived in loving obedience to God.

 

Jesus said, " … the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him" (John 4:23). True worship is not defined by the style of music, the quality of the choir, the talent of the lead singer or the emotions we experience during singing. It begins with a heart surrendered to God and continues in a life that is humble and sanctified.  Worship is offering ourselves to God every day. It is living for Him at home, at work, in school, in the marketplace, and in the church. Every act of obedience, seeking holiness and humility, becomes an act of worship.

 

This truth is not new. When King Saul thought that sacrifices could compensate for his disobedience, the prophet Samuel declared, "To obey is better than sacrifice" (1 Sam. 15:22).  God is not impressed by outward religious activity when the heart is rebellious.  The worship that pleases God is expressed in honesty, kindness, forgiveness, generosity, humility, and faithful obedience (Micah 6:8).

 

Certainly, we should sing with joy, for the Psalms repeatedly call God's people to praise Him with songs. But our singing should be the overflow of a life already surrendered to Christ. If our lips praise God on Sunday but our lives deny Him on Monday, our worship is useless.

 

The greatest worship leader is not merely the person standing with a microphone. It is every believer whose life points others to Christ through faithful obedience. God delights in songs of praise, but He delights even more in hearts that love Him enough to obey Him.

 

My friend, today, let us ask ourselves not merely if we enjoyed the worship, but rather, "Is my life an act of worship?" That is the worship our Heavenly Father seeks.

 

Prayer: Lord Jesus, teach me to worship You not only with my lips but with my whole life. May my thoughts, words, and actions be holy and reflect my love for You, so that my life would be one of worship. Amen.
