Faith and Action!

Aug 03, 2021

When we think of the book of Genesis, what comes to our mind is the fall.  But the book of Exodus is a book of deliverance! We read about two rescue events, one is the Passover, and the other is crossing the Red Sea.  Both the events are part of the story of the redemption of the Israelites from bondage, but they are a little different from each other.  During the Passover deliverance, the people of Israel were passive onlookers.  The Israelites painted their doorposts, ate the meal, but they were waiting for God to move.  But the crossing of the Red Sea took their faith one step further.  Here the people of Israel had to participate actively.  It required obedience and a deliberate...

Boxed-in!

Jul 27, 2021

The Exodus of the Israelites from Egypt is one of the most remarkable incidences recorded in the Bible.  It portrays the power of God, the plan of God, and the path ordained by God for His chosen people.  God has a plan and purpose for each of us, and God is constantly leading us in that direction.  Sometimes our life is filled with trials and tears; sometimes, with problems and pain;  sometimes, with sadness and sickness.  We want to ask God why He has allowed it in our life. We have many unanswered questions in our hearts.   The Bible teaches an important lesson, vital for our life on earth.  The God of the Bible is all-powerful, all-knowing, and is present everywhere! &...

El Bethel

Jul 20, 2021

After the peaceful encounter with Esau, Jacob seems to have forgotten God's command.  While Jacob was in Laban's house, God said, "Return to the land of your fathers and to your family…" (Gen 31:3).  Succoth and Shechem were not part of God's plan.  Esau offered to lead Jacob back to their father's place, but Jacob refused and turned to Succoth. He had been living in tents until now, but in Succoth, Jacob built himself a house!  What motivated Jacob to move out of Succoth, we do not know, but when he finally moved into Canaan, he bought a plot of land and pitched his tent in front of Shechem, a Canaanite city.  Isaac, Jacob's father, lived in Kirjath Arba, that is Hebron (Gen 35:27)....

In the Shelter of the Most High!

Jul 13, 2021

The Coronavirus has forced us to walk on our terrace, where we have a garden.  We thank God for it because it is quite pleasant to walk among our trees on the terrace and the trees from our neighbor's garden!  We have a Moringa tree on our terrace.  It is a high-yielding tree.  As you may know, the Moringa trunk is of a fragile type. It cannot stand strong winds.  But our tree on our terrace has survived many cyclones over the years. Not even a single branch has been broken in all these years!  There is a secret behind it!  A huge Neem tree is leaning into our front yard from our neighbor's house, and it has spread its branches all around.  The Moringa tree is standing in...

Mahanaim

Jul 06, 2021

Mahanaim is said to be near Jabbok, beyond the Jordan River. In Hebrew, it means two camps. Jacob had just left the house of Laban, his father-in-law, where he had lived for twenty years.  Jacob was going back to his father's place in obedience to God, who said, "Return unto the land of thy fathers, and to thy kindred; and I will be with thee" (Gen 31:3). He was traveling with his wives, children, servants, and all his wealth turned into cattle.  His road leads him close to the country of Esau. Jacob was no soldier, and he was naturally terrified to meet his brother. I am sure Jacob's heart was troubled as he plodded along with his defenseless company of women and children trailing behind him.  The ange...

God of all my tomorrows!

Jun 29, 2021

The last book we studied in our Bible Study Fellowship class was Genesis. As we were discussing the story of Noah and the Ark, my cousin, who was in my class, shared this beautiful insight. The Lord gave detailed instructions to Noah on how he should build the Ark. God gave him the plan, the material specifications, and the size for the Ark.  God gave clear instructions on how Noah was to gather the animals into Ark.  When it was time for Noah, his wife, his three sons, and their wives to get on to the Ark, the LORD said to Noah, "Come into the ark, you and all your household, because I have seen that you are righteous before Me in this generation" (Gen 7:1). The Lord was inside the Ark before Noah and his family...

As in the days of Noah …

Jun 22, 2021

Our ground-floor apartment will be vacant in a short time, and we have spread the word around for a good tenant.  Now there is a period of waiting. Anyone looking for a house in this part of town may drop by to see the house anytime.  Our friends can call at any time and bring someone by to see the house. How do we watch for the coming of the new tenant? Do we stand by the gate and wait for them to show up down the street? No.  Sometimes we may get a good and reliable tenant soon, but sometimes, it may take months. We have to keep the house clean and go on with our daily lives. That is how we watch for the second coming of Christ!  We do not have to be running after prophets or discerning the signs regarding the...

The Tree of Life!

Jun 15, 2021

The story of the Bible begins and ends with the 'Tree of Life'! It is amazing to see the 'Tree of Life' in the first creation story and the New Creation! Tracing the tree through the Bible provides us with the opportunity to reflect on God's unfolding plan to restore his creation and our place in it. The 'Tree of life' is mentioned four times in Revelation, three of which are in the final chapter. In the book of Genesis, God placed the 'Tree of Life' in the midst of the Garden of Eden.  It was guarded from Adam and Eve but did not disappear after the fall.  Instead, it was safely relocated to the Paradise of God.  After challenging the church at Ephesus, the Bible says in Rev 2:7, "To him who overcomes I will giv...

Behold, I stand at the door and knock!

Jun 08, 2021

Long ago, I attended a youth retreat, and in that retreat, the main speaker challenged everyone to share the gospel with others.  He demonstrated how we could strike up a conversation, talk about our sinful state, the need for a Saviour and then present Christ as the Saviour.  To help us through this process, he gave us seven Bible verses.  If someone is ready to read the Bible, we can take them through by following those seven verses!  I used it diligently many times! That set ended with Rev 3:20, where it says, "Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come into him and dine with him, and he with Me."  If we looked only at this verse, we...

The Seven Blessings of Revelation

Jun 01, 2021

Many consider the Book of Revelation a scary book or a complex book that cannot be understood.  Not that I know everything, but I believe we have to make an effort to understand it since the Lord has given it to us.  When I read the book during my quiet time, the seven blessings or beatitudes embedded in this apocalyptic literature struck me! Revelation's message tells the church and the tribulation saints that they need to be happy because of their position in Christ.  In his Exegetical Notes on the book of Revelation, David Fields says that the seven beatitudes of Revelation are placed there by the Holy Spirit to encourage us. If we see things the way God sees them, we will get a fresh revelation of Jesus Christ even am...
